What is Piriformis Syndrome?

Piriformis syndrome is the result of a tight or irritated piriformis muscle which is a small muscle located underneath the glutes that runs from the sacrum (tail bone) to the top of the femur near your hip. This muscle pirmarily allows for external (lateral) rotation of the thigh. The sciatic nerve runs directly underneath or sometimes through the piriformis muscle. If the piriformis muscle is tight or inflamed it may compress or irritate the sciatic nerve, leading to pain, numbness, or tingling along the back of the leg and into the foot.

Causes of piriformis syndrome include:

Muscle spasm or tightness in the piriformis

Overuse or repetitive activities (e.g., running, cycling)

Direct trauma to the piriformis muscle

Prolonged sitting or poor posture

With proper treatment and lifestyle adjustments, most people with piriformis syndrome recover fully. However, without addressing underlying causes like posture, biomechanics, or activity patterns, symptoms may return. If you think you may be suffering from piriformis syndrome, schedule a consultation and exam with our experienced chiropractor today.
